"Philippine Literatures in the New Century, " The National Seminar for teachers and writers was held at the University of the Philippines - Diliman last Octoober 24 to 26. The seminar, which focused on the achievements of Philippine literature in the last century as well as directions it is likely to take in the next millennium, was meant primarily for tertiary-level and secondary-level faculty members who teach Philippine Literature. It is jointly sponsored by the Likhaan: UP Creative Writing Center and the DLSU Bienvenido Creative Writing Center, with the collaboration of the Atenoo Fine Arts Program: Creative Writing, and the UST Center for Creative Writing and Studies. Endorsed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS), the three-day seminar consisted of lectures by the country's most prominent writers in Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Waray, Ilocano, Filipino, and English. The are: Virgilio Almario, Gemino Abad, Merli ALunan, Victor Sugbu, Leoncio Deriada, Bienvenido Lumber, Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, Ariel Agcaoili, Nicanor Tiongson, Doreen Fernandez, and Isagani Cruz. Other writers , like Jun Cruz Reyes, Teo Antonio, Domingo Landicho, Genoveva Matute, Lilia Quindoza Santiago, Ophelia Dimalanta, Jose Y. Dalisay, J. Niel Garcia, Charlson Ong, Vim Nadera, Ruel de Vera, Susan Lara, Marjorie Evasco, Benilda Santos, Roland Tolentino, Ricardo de Ungria,, and Krip Yuson, were on hand to read from their works and meet the participants. The seminary provided a rare opportunity for the participants to listen to this distinguished panel of lecturers as they shared their expertise in their respective genres and their assessment of the state of Philippine literatures.
